34,971 bets

Across the four counties AEF covers, there are 34,971 private establishments. A handful are household names; the overwhelming majority are founder-run businesses — the restaurants, firms, shops, fleets, and practices whose owners sign the front of the check. Every one is a running bet on the Gulf Coast. That's the economy AEF documents.

02

The room is the thesis

AEF exists on a simple premise: the people making those bets are the region's most reliable narrators, and nobody was writing their account down. So the forum seats a hundred of them a month, films the conversation, bans the sales pitches, and cuts the cameras at 7:50 so the truest part can be said out loud.

The featured voices — an investor, a chef, a hospitality founder — are the first entries in a record that grows with every forum. If you're one of the 34,971, the list is where the next invitation lands.
